- Ergonomics is especially important for animators who can look forward to
- a LOT of screen time. What is the background BEHIND and AROUND your monitor?
- Ideally, it should be approx the same brightness as the screen itself to prevent
- your irises from constantly ramping open and shut. I put a small light behind my
- monitor to achieve this. (Since I also do gaffing, this has the added bonus of
- lookin' really cOoL.)
-
- Conversely, if there is a window or other bright area behind your monitor,
- your eyes will suffer similarly.

- No. It can only import .geo(videoscape) format objects in the current
- version. If you have an Amiga, you could pick up a demo version of Raydance
- via ftp. I dunno how complete the demo is, but if the script files are
- there, you will have a good idea of how the programming language is.

- Hello -
-
- I have an unregistered LW for NT/Windows for sale to the highest bidder. All
- manuals included, dongle, even the little stickers. Unregistered, good as new.
-
- Also have Lightwave Modeler tapes 1 & 2 and Lightwave essentials -- these are
- the 3.5 versions for the Amiga, still useful but missing some features. And
- the first 12 issues of Lightwave Pro. I'd like to sell the whole mesugatz as
- a package, but tell me whether you're offering for the whole or just parts.
-
- I'm leaving town shortly & would like to conclude a deal by Friday if
- possible. Later responses may not be replied to.

- Also, I've got a 12 x 18 drawing pad, the Calcomp model, for the Amiga for

- Can be upgraded for other systems, but it has worked wonderfully on a 3000 & a

- Help!!

- I finally got my copy of Lightwave 3D for Intel today (after months of
- agonizing!!) and I've been sifting through the manuals and varioius
- tutorials. I've come to an dead stop when it comes to saving the
- animations. While the manual tells me to go to the Saving Animations

- installed the right stuff? I have installed the Win 32s that were on
- the CD and I am running it on Win 3.11 with 16 meg RAM.
-
- Any help would be appreciated.

- Yes. So does the Vertex Modeler, (an often overlooked but not
- altogether bad way to do some modeling tasks - and it can read and write
- several zillion file formats, so you can use it to convert objects
- between different 3D programs).

- Just a thought, (I don't have the cd so I don't know for sure), but
- perhaps the problem is that the files are stored on the cd in a
- directory with a long file name. If you are running MSDOS 6.22 /
- Windows 3.11 or below, the OS doesn't seem to be able to copy the
- files. The only way I found around it was to install Win95/NT on the
- machine, (I have some cd's with this problem and they work fine now
- with the new OS).

- Could someone who has successfully done the above please respond by

-
- The hurdle I want to get over is that the path name for saves is
- hard-coded into the scene file. NT's path is:
-
- s:renders/cohen
-
- whereas SGI's path to the same thing is:
-
- /nfs/Dog/s/renders/cohen
-
- I know I can use the relative path option off of the Newtek directory,
- but I want to save files to a complete different HD. Is there a
- option like 'assign' on Amigas in UNIX that would allow me to assign
- s: to that path?
-
- BTW, why is there no way for screamernet to occasionally check to see

-
- Please reply by email if possible.

- SH> Lightwave is a stunning product. I'm amazed every time I use it. But
- SH> people get pissed off when even the best product is seen as being

-
- Marketing, cash flow, and stock holders are a software development team's
- worst nightmare. These groups demand release dates be set months in advance
- and software design is expected to meet them with little consultation I'm
- sure.
-
- I wonder if Allan & Stuart could openly discuss their feelings on this? Were
- they asked how long it would take? Were they given the time necessary?
-
- I doubt it...
-
- And a really big point is this; Software development is more of an art than a
- science. These large applications are works of art, not engineered
- production line assemblies. How can you dictate a time frame for creative
- endeavors?
-
- Do artists work to timetables? Actually, we all have deadlines as animators.
-
- But that only proves my point. How often do you get the time you really need
- to finish an animation project? Pretty rare isn't it.
-
- Its very difficult to stamp completion dates on a project where you don't
- know have the battles you'll face. Software development is very much a `seat
- of the pants endeavor.'
-
-
- SH> Too much of it causes abandonment by the user base.
-
-
- It may happen that missed release dates hurt a products reputation, but I'd
- rather have a delayed finished product than enter a yearly update schedule
- (with upgrade fees) as has happened with so many PC products. Marketing sets
- a timetable, software development often can't meet it, and so the product is
- released with known bugs. Do we want LW to go that route? I think not...
-
- A few weeks, or months delay is less frustrating, than many hours spent
- redoing work that has crashed, been lost, or rendered badly. The current
- version is adequate till the next can be released in a finished state.
-
- OTOH, when know bugs are fixed, patch files made available through the
- Internet should be released as soon as possible. Instead of making everyone
- work around known bugs till the next release.
-
-
- SH> Despite these missed target dates, keep up the good work, Stuart.
-
- I agree completely. Allen and Stuart are to be congradulated on an excellent
- piece of software that has helped change the face of 3D animation. As NewTek
- has done with desktop video.

- You're getting it wrong - the way to delay objects is to NOT use
- dupes. To switch an object/image once in 200 frames, you only need IMAGE001.IFF
- and, say, IMAGE137.IFF, with nothing in between.

-
- in that same vein, how about a primitive search engine (optionally
- enabled/disabled) that'd LOOK for the files if it cant find them,
- checking first in the last dirrectory used.
- if it cant find them, then you are asked for a root search path, to be
- as explicit as you need.... but only on the first one, after that, if
- it shared the same device and path, it wouldt bother you again.
-
- so itd hunt the drive a few times.... weve had to do that once or
- twice anyways.

- Well if they got away with it with 3DS(they did, still are) why is it
- Assinine to think they can't with Max. With all the raving on how good it
- is, my guess is they will have no problem. Lightwave is easy , powerfull

- Boback:
-
- You have sutmbled on one of the toughest questions facing a new business. (or an old one for that matter.) When
- I first started doing graphic profesionaly I charged by the finished second. That, I quickly learned was not
- the way to go. Some one can come to you and say, "I need a 5 second Flying logo to start over there and end
- over here, and I don't really care what it looks like." This may take you ten minutes of work (plus rendering)
- not bad you earned your money. Your next client however will invaribly want, "a 5 second Flying logo that
- starts as a pool of molten metal, then energy beems shoot out as the metal forms the letters, then explodes
- into a milloin peices." don't laugh it happend to me. Same 5 Seconds but this one will take a week (plus
- rendering).
- I find it better to charge by the project based on a Day-Rate. I charge $300 per day (or any part thereof).
- Figure howmany days it will take you, then add two. Then add any aditional charges, like scanning of logos at
- the local comp store. It may take a while to figure out what you should be charging per day, but if you do a
- job and you fell like you got screwed, raise the rate. To start with I would not charge less than $100 per day.
- If you find that you have trouble getting clients then lower it.
-
- Last peice of advice never waver on your rate. never be afraid to reject a client if he cant afford you. just
- tell them that perhaps they should find someone else. if you lower your rate of give discounts, you will never
- be able to charge full price to that client again.

- I would like to get input on everyone's thoughts regarding where new
- features should be discussed. Stuart, if there is discussion here, will
- you be able to take time from your loaded schedule to comment? Is there
- anyone maintaining a list of proposed feature changes, and the potential
- for the same to be implemented? Once upon a time I attended Newtek-U, and
- had a wonderfull focus group with other dealers (was one once), and some
- of the folks from Newtek (Claude St. Germain, et al). This was the first
- time that I felt that Newtek was _listening_. Later I learned that the
- suggestions we made never reached anyone of importance (ie. Stuart,
- Allen). What is everyones feeling on the proper forum for such topics?
-
- Jumping the gun a little, here are a few features that I would like to see
- (out of an increasingly long list).
-
- 1. When loading a scene, and Layout can't find some data,
- it would be nice if there was an ABORT button between
- OK / CANCEL. It gets old hitting cancel 100 times to abort
- a scene load.
-
- 2. Put a radio button (check box) in the effects menu to
- disable antialiasing the background / foreground images.
- again it gets old watching it waste time ($$$!) anti-
- aliasing a clean image.
-
- 3. Durring the initial stages of rendering, have the renderer
- check to see if there is any change between frames
- (envelopes, motion graphs, et al). If there _isn't_, flag
- duplicate frames so that Lightwave just saves multiple
- copies of the resulting duplicate images. This would result
- in _MAJOR_ time savings for much of our rendering. I know
- that this can effectively be done in editing, but I would
- rather have it done while I sleep.
-
- I would like to get some input on some of this!

-
- All the anim savers are implemented as plug-ins. You must...
-
- a) move the plugins from the CD to the plugins/layout directory (I don't
- remember whether this happens automatically during setup); then,
-
- b) initialize the plugins through the Options panel in Layout.
-
- If you intend to save .avi choose the NT_AVI plug-in. Forget the HIIP stuff.
-
- You're going to have to load and initialize all the modeller plugins, too.
-
- I'm pretty sure this is covered in a readme file on the CD.

- That'd be nice... In the meantime I've found this helpful.
-
- I assume Win95/NT has something akin to:
-
- assign LWObjs: mydir2 objects/houses/big objects/houses/small ADD
-
- Then anything looking for LWObjs:Myobject will search the given
- directories. If another one comes along later, just:
-
- assign LWObjs: mumble/tree_objects ADD
-
- etc.
-
- Now the problem is that there doesn't seem to be a convention for how
- objects should be saved: some people use absolute paths, some use
- relative paths, some use paths relative to Lightwave's home "3D:", and
- some use assigns such as the above. If you stick to the above
- convention, adding new object directories later is trivial, but loading
- someone *else's* project may not be. In this case, the scene files are
- just ASCII and you can run 'em through emacs and replace everything with
- LWObjs: as above.
-
- I think the real problem is the lack of a convention. There's no point
- to having LW duplicate a search engine when OSs have perfectly good
- search engines built in, IMHO.

- AutoDesk never claimed to be shipping BiPed with MAX, they didn't even
- develop BiPed. AutoDesk is STILL throwing in a whole group of the Yost
- disks into 3DS including lens flares, glows, highlights, optimize and
- many more, plus all the new features specific to MAX. 3DS has the same

- AutoDesk isn't getting away with anything, they have always been very
- vocal about letting 3rd party groups worry about plug-ins. It is getting
- a lot of rave reviews cause in in Beta it looks like an incredible
- program. Lightwave is far from being young in the animation market, hell
- when did Toaster first come out, wasn't it before 3DS? There is a huge
- wealth of 3DS stuff on tape and has been for a while now. Don't tapes
- serve the same purpose as books when it comes to pirates learning how to
- use their cracked versions? Now that Lightwave is on the PC you will,
- and probably already have seen an increase in the number of posts
- looking for Lightwave cracks. I see NewTek thriveing with Lightwave well
- into the immediate future, but I hardly think users of other programs
- are sheep. I have never had the urge to graze while using Alias.

- Hello all,
- I'm using Lightwave Intel and Alpha and I'm having technical difficulties,
- but not with Lightwave. I'm having difficulty getting my two Lightwave
- boxes to talk to each other. I'm posting to this newsgroup because I can't
- seem to get any help from anywhere else and I'm hoping someone else out
- there has had to configure a similar type of setup. I dread the
- possibility of having to call Microsoft Networking tech- support.
-
- To start with the two systems in question:
-
- 1 Pentium 100
- Win 95
- Ether16 LAN Card
- Cable connection
-
- 1 Alpha 21164
- Win NT Workstation
- Cogent EM960 PCI Adapter
- Cable connection
-
- My goal is to simply have complete access to each box no matter which seat
- I'm at. I also have an HP 660c connected to my Win95 that would be nice to
- print to from NT.
-
- After much hair pulling I've decided the best way to setup the boxes would
- be to start from scratch (meaning network settings) and remove all
- protocols and services from both boxes. Now I need to know the procedure
- for connection. Such as:
-
- Which protocols and services are best to install and configure on each box
- (I realize they need to be the same, but do I need more than 1 protocol on
- each machine)? And when I say "configure" I'm talking about maybe having
- to setup some kind of IP address and subnet mask (if so, I haven't a clue
- what to use for #'s).
-
- After protocols and services, I believe I need to set up Users and
- accounts or something, and I'm not sure the best naming procedure to
- employ on each individual box (meaning, do I need to log on to my win95
- using the same User name that I set up on the NT machine). Will I have to
- do any actual file editing to make any of this work or will the setup
- boxes take care of all that?
-
- On the Win95 box do I setup for "Windows Logon" or "Client for Microsoft
- Networks"?
-
- If I share my drives do I also have to "map" them? And if the drives are
- setup for sharing do I still need to setup sharing for individual
- directories?
-
- Working with these systems for the past week, I have only been able
- ,occasionally, to see my Win95 computer in the shared directories box of
- the file managers "Connect Network Drive" submenu on the NT box. Even then
- I couldn't see my shared directories. I've never yet seen the NT box in my
- Win95 network neighborhood. The setup diagnostic of the ether16 card says
- it's connecting to something so I don't think the cards are having
- conflicts.
-
- After recently connecting 2 Win95 machines very easily, this situation is
- really aggravating. Any possible help would be greatly appreciated.
-
- Thanks

- If you've got the extra $, Adobe Premiere does a really good job of

- I need to find a reliable way to trace bitmaps (2 color, scanned logo
- kind of things) into LW objects. Anyone done this? Have any
- suggestions. I have Adobe Streamline which will trace and create a
- DXF, but it's not a DXF LW will import. (Give an error of, I think,
- MEM_ALLOC_ZERO or some such.)
-
- BTW this is on a PC.
-
- Thanks,

- Landscapes, sunsets, Oceans or other similar scenes, turn to the
- Landscaping chapter. This book should save all Lightwave users a lot of
- frustration by eliminating the guesswork out of today's most popular
- scenes. Professionally written and full of great content, The FX Kit for
- Lightwave is and indispensable reference and learning tool for the
- Lightwave user.

- Thanks for those who replied by e-mail and here. I've got another
- problem...<sigh>
-
- I've spent the better part of the evening trying to work on the
- Modeller and for some reason it keeps kicking me out of the program
- and back into Windows. No warning at all and it's a clean end to the
- program. I restart LW and start manipulating my objects, camera and
- light and then all of a sudden I'm back in Windows. A few
- manipulations is all it takes. After the sixth time, I gave up.
-
- Any ideas?
-
- I'm running it on a P100, 16 meg RAM, Win 3.11.
-
- Other than these problems, I think I'm getting the hang of it! :-)

-
- I have to disagree on both counts. Lightwave has been around for a while now, it just hasn't been
- a stand alone program that long. Lightwave is and will be used a lot in TV/FILM animation but 3DS
- does get used probably more than you think. It doesn't get all the glory of doing B5 or Seaquest
- but it is in commercials, Logos, advertising, and movies. And 3DS is also widely known for its
- games. I think software like Lightwave, 3DS, and especially EIAS have really shown that animation
- isn't just a tool of the high end studio with workstations. Now that Softimage is moving to NT,
- and Lightwave is crossplatform, and MAX is being released you will really see a shakedown in what
- animation costs. What once needed to be done on a large network of expensive workstations can be
- done on a small renderfarm of PCs. It's only a matter of Lightwave vs. 3DS to those religous to a
- program, it really should be PC(including Mac and Amiga)vs. workstation. I have a feeling PC
- animation will begin to take over what was once in the hands of only the rich studios.
- SGI/Alias/Wavefront are really going to have to turn out something beyond incredible with Maya to
- keep from being hurt.

- Although it appears that the background image is being anti-

- I'm not the first to say it, and I won't be the last, but Win32s is a rat
- hole.
-
- Glom onto a copy of Win95 if you possibly can. It's a lot more solid
- than Win 3.1 in running 32-bit apps. And it's a whole bunch faster in
- rendering most LW scenes.
-
- If at all possible, get yourself NT workstation, which is an even bigger step
- forward in stability--basically, LW doesn't crash, at all, in NT.
-
- I'm not a fan of 95, but it makes much more sense than 3.1 if you're going to
- run LW.
-
- Better start saving for RAM, too...
